Passive income doesn’t just buy comfort; it buys choice. The choice to say no to uninspired projects. The choice to create for love, not survival. The choice to take risks, explore weird ideas, and make something purely because it feels right.
We all know that relying solely on freelance can be unstable, and going full-time makes you vulnerable to unexpected lay offs. This disrupts stability, creativity, and confidence, so embracing multiple income streams can foster peace of mind and better prepare you for a rainy day. The initial time investment can quickly start to pay off, so let's start building your launch pad. Luckily, you are naturally creative which opens up more options. Consider giving any of these 8 ideas a go:
Types of Passive Income
Digital Products: Creating and selling digital products like e-books, printables, or templates can be a lucrative venture.
Online Courses and Workshops: A great way to share your creative knowledge, and put a few extra dollars in your pocket.
Stock and Digital Art: Selling photography, art, or even music involves an easy process. The best part is you probably already have something ready to go.
Affiliate Marketing: Earn commission on promoting another company's products or services. You can easily incorporate this if you already have a creative platform.
Print-on-Demand: Designing merchandise (or in my case, coloring books through Amazon KDP) allows for creating and selling custom products without upfront costs.
Licensing Artwork: Could you image your pattern designs featured on the next Target product launch? Getting into licensing can lead to unexpected opportunities. (This may be the most ambitious of the options, but the payoff could be the biggest.)
Website Display Advertising: If you already have a blog or content channel, you can generate passive income by incorporating ads. (This is probably the easiest option, but you need a lot of traffic to see much of a payout.)
Investing: Investing in stocks can be a potential source of passive income for the brave. Creative individuals are often in-the-know on early trends, giving us insight necessary to choose early investment opportunities wisely.
Bonus Idea: Vending machine ownership! I just started looking into this, and even though there is some maintenance, there's a lot of potential for decent money.
Getting Started with Passive Income
Assess Your Skills and Interests
What to you enjoy and excel at? What tools or supplies do you already have to get started?
Start Small
Begin with manageable projects. Take time to test, learn and build confidence.
Build an Online Presence
Most of these require some sort of online platform to showcase and sell your work or your brand. TikTok, Instagram, Substack, personal blog, etc.
Learn the Basics of Marketing
I come from the marketing industry so I've been exposed to what works and what doesn't. Publications such as AdAge, give great tips and inspiration.
Embrace the Learning Curve
Turn your challenges into learning experiences. Lean into your network on advice, and don't be afraid to try something different.
There’s a quiet kind of power that comes from knowing your bills are covered before you lift a brush, pen, or camera. Because when money works for you, your mind is free to work for art.
